August 30, 2011Kitchen Remodels: A Return on Your Investment
September 13, 2011It means weeks of take-out and paper plates, workmen and dust. However, the pay-off for the upheaval is THE KITCHEN OF YOUR DREAMS. Imagine the joy of preparing your family holiday feast in your newly remodeled kitchen. No more tripping over each other, room for all your extended family and all your seasonal or fine china? Though it seems far away, if your kitchen is to be ready for this holiday season, the time to start is now.
Kitchen Remodeling Timeline:
Week One (Say September 1) – The Planning Stages: Assess your kitchen with your family. What key features would you like? Which appliances would you like to keep? What can you not do without? Set a budget and meet with your banker if you need a loan.
Weeks Two to Four (To end of September) – Meet with a Kitchen Designer: At this stage you can confidently discuss your needs, your wants and your budget. Planning can begin with choosing your style, finishes and materials to be incorporated. Interview general contractors and discuss with him/her what permits will be necessary. Note: If you are a little indecisive, this step may take longer.
Weeks Five to Ten (early October) – Preparing Your Kitchen: Once the cabinetry, countertops, and appliances are ordered begin packing up your kitchen. This is a good time to create boxes labeled; keep, donate, or trash. Identify a sink in which you can wash dishes. Move your microwave to a convenient location for cooking or re-heating. Decide where to put your refrigerator. Everything else should be put in boxes out of the way. If you are planning on all new appliances, this may be a good time for a garage sale.
Week Eleven-Nineteen (November) – Demolition: This will vary depending on the size of the remodel, but it typically takes a week or less for a professional crew to deconstruct a room. The issue is not necessarily the demolition, it is what comes after… plumbing, electrical, drywall, etc. Typical remodels take eight weeks from the time construction begins. This, again, may vary depending on the extent of your project and the materials you have chosen. Given Murphy’s Law, it’s always good to factor in a little extra time.
Weeks Eleven to Nineteen Continued (December) – Installation: Installation typically occurs in this order; flooring, cabinetry, countertops, paint and finally appliances. Now you can unpack those boxes and start enjoying your beautiful, new kitchen!
