How to Pick a Remodeler
June 4, 2014Communicating With Your Remodeler
June 18, 2014It’s a common story: Homeowner attempts a remodeling or other home improvement project on their own. Homeowner runs into a problem. Homeowner is stuck asking themselves, “Do I try to fix it, or do I call a contractor to bail me out?”
This is a scenario we have seen played out on sit-coms, HGTV, and—for more than a few of us—in our own homes. “Do-it-yourself” can be a great money saver, and a lot of fun, but when things go wrong, the fun ends—fast. So the question is, when do you say “when” on a do-it-yourself project?
The Risks
Attempting a home improvement or remodeling project on your own can be a good way to save money, and there is nothing like the pride a homeowner feels when they can point to something and say, “I did that!” However you are taking on some risk if you are in over your head. A few of the more common risks of DIY include:
- Injury: The risk of injury, or the acquisition of one, may be enough for you to say, “when” and call in a professional. Things like electrical rewiring or plumbing may best be left to an expert.
- Money: A DIY project might seem like a cost-saving measure, until you hit a snag that will ultimately cost you more money. A project may look easy, but inexperience often ends up costing the DIY homeowner when a professional has to come in for a repair. Carefully consider the skill level required for your project before you start pulling down shower tile or knocking down drywall.
- Time: Even if you could complete the job, is it worth your time? If you are just starting out with DIY it might be better to get your feet wet with a smaller project, and work your way up. If you dive right in with a huge project—like refinishing wood floors, or re-tiling an entire bathroom—you may find yourself short on weekends for a while!

Calling in Reinforcements
There are a seemingly infinite number of articles online that debate the merits of do-it-yourself versus using a contractor. But what happens when you start a project and can’t finish? Most contractors are happy to come in and take over a DIY, and many are willing to consult with you even before you start. Consulting with a contractor on a job that you feel may be over your head, before you start, might be the best way to go, but never be afraid to call an expert to help you out of a tight spot.
Finding Someone You Trust
Finding a contractor your trust is the key to homeowner happiness. Did you see last week’s C&D blog on How to Find a Remodeler? We recommend utilizing the consumer resources available through the Greater Houston Builders Association to help you find the right remodeling professional for you. Who knows how much a DIY-gone-wrong could cost, so having a trusted contractor on speed dial is priceless!
