HOW TO CHOOSE A DESIGNER

Remodeling projects are often a large undertaking and can last months, therefore it is essential to choose your designer wisely.  The right designer will use your input, follow your budget, and try to make the project go as smoothly as possible.  If you follow the guidelines below you will have a good foundation for making your project a pleasant and worthwhile experience.

You Don’t Know Jack!

Make sure your designer knows their products.  There are many different aspects of the design industry, however a designer should know what they are selling you or be willing to find an answer for you if it is outside their realm of focus.  Be sure to ask your designer questions and express concerns about your particular space.  If they do not attempt to find answers or solutions to your dilemmas, they might not be right for your project.

Follow Your Instincts

If you have a good or bad feeling about someone, there is usually a reason for it.  If you find that you do not “click” with your designer, remember you have many phone calls and meetings over the next few months to make your project work; if you don’t “click” now, you probably won’t later!

Ask Around

Word of mouth is a powerful thing!  If you see a remodel or renovation you love, be sure to ask the owner who they used to do the project. People are usually eager to offer up information about their project and what it was like working with the professionals they used.  First-Hand experience is often the best!  Another option is reading testimonials.  Most respectable companies have testimonials on their website or are happy to supply you with them.  

Don’t Hesitate to Inquire

If you ask, designers that provide good work will often take you to a previous job or put you in contact with a previous client to showcase their work.  It is a great way to get a reference and see what the designer can do for you.  Asking your designer questions is vital for a smooth remodeling process.  Good designers do not want to keep you in the dark.  The more information they can give you the better.  If you have questions on products, lead time, referrals for other areas in the design industry, or about the way the company works, do not hesitate to ask.

Be Clear

Make sure you are clear about what you want.  If you have magazine clippings or pictures from the internet be sure to bring them in to the designer to better express what you are looking for.  Also, if you have pictures of your home, especially the space you are looking to redesign, they lend a hand in making new selections to fit in with your style.  Sometimes it can be uncomfortable to talk about budget aspects but it is very helpful to the designer to create the best design with the appropriate products without giving you unrealistic quotes and/or estimates.  There are often other solutions besides eliminating cabinetry to reduce cost.  A knowledgeable designer should be able to help you achieve the look you desire within your budget.
