Back-to-School Strategy: Garage Sale
August 6, 20147th Annual GHBA Remodeler’s Garage Sale
August 20, 2014Habitat for Humanity has been building homes for hardworking, low-income families the world over since its founding in 1976. The Houston branch—Houston Habitat—is dedicated to that same mission right here in our city. Through Houston Habitat, thousands of sponsors and volunteers have built more than 950 homes for Houstonians; Habitat Partner Families contribute 300 hours of “sweat equity” and complete training on home ownership to purchase homes at cost, with zero-interest mortgages.
Houston Habitat gives families a hand up—a new home that is more than just safe shelter, but a new start. Did you know that you can support Habitat for Humanity just by shopping for materials for your own new home?
The Houston Habitat ReStore is one of our city’s hidden gems. The ReStore is a home improvement store that offers new, and new-like, building materials for deeply-discounted prices. Open to the public, shoppers can enjoy discounts on furniture, appliances, cabinets, and more—and proceeds from the sale go to Habitat for Humanity. The Habitat mission is to eliminate substandard housing in Houston, and so by shopping at ReStore you are not only getting a great deal, you are helping families in need.
Another way to help is by donating your own new and new-like household items to the ReStore. Not only will your donation benefit Houston Habitat, you’ll be keeping your old household items out of the landfill—a socially and environmentally friendly decision! Your donation is tax deductible, and the ReStore can even arrange to pick up your donated materials.
To make things just a little bit easier, ReStore can also help with deconstruction, and they offer the following services:
- Kitchen cabinet removal: Trained staff remove and haul away kitchen cabinets and appliances, and leave your kitchen ready for renovation.
- Strip outs: Hardwood floors, doors, windows, lighting, lumber, plumbing, etc.
- Residential Deconstruction: Partial or full-scale projects; competitively-priced deconstruction services. Donated materials are tax-deductible contributions!
Given how stressful the deconstruction phase can be, this is an incredible incentive for homeowners; invaluable help with deconstruction, pick-up of materials, and a tax-deduction, all through Habitat ReStore!
