February 24, 2012Our clients are knowledgeable, stylish, and up on all of the latest trends, and we take notice when they ask questions. In addition to growing inquiries about products made in America, we are hearing more questions from clients about green products. Environmentally conscious homeowners want products sourced and manufactured in a responsible, earth-friendly way. This week’s blog is dedicated to exploring products that can help your next renovation ‘go green.’
Silestone by Cosentino
Silestone by Cosentino products qualify for points toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for builders, companies, and individuals. Silestone offers products that qualify for LEED points in three separate areas: recycled content (10%); recycled content (20%); emitting materials. You can also choose from Silestone colors which are manufactured with 35% post-consumer recycled content.
Silestone has also developed its ECO line of countertops. ECO surfaces are made with 75% recycled content from post-industrial or post-consumer materials, all bound by environmentally-friendly resin which is derived in part from corn resin. The materials used in ECO by Cosentino countertops have reached the end of their life-cycle, and are comprised mostly of glass, mirror, stone scraps, corn, and porcelain. Salvaging these raw materials reduces new mining and the amount of materials that would end up in a landfill. ECO by Cosentino surfaces are produced using environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes in which 94% of the water used is recycled; minerals used in the production of ECO by Cosentino are fully restored under strict stewardship programs, and emissions are also strictly controlled.
Wood-Mode
There is so much to love about Wood-Mode cabinetry, and their commitment to the environment is at the top of the list. Wood-Mode has an extensive environmental policy laid out on their website, detailing its commitment to environmentally sound practices; the company has been pursuing these policies for the more than sixty-five years they have been manufacturing high-quality cabinetry for your home. When it comes to environmentalism, Wood-Mood focuses on:
• Sustainability: Wood-Mode is certified by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA), meeting standards to qualify them for the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP).
• Air Pollution Control: Wood-Mode installed and began operating their Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO), which destroys emissions generated in the cabinetry finishing process.
• Protecting and Conserving Water Resources: Wood-Mode complies with all local state regulations for the discharge of any waste water. Steam condensate is recovered and re-circulated back to the boiler systems to reduce the amount of un-treated water necessary to produce more steam.
• Efficient Waste Management: Sawdust and wood scraps are ground into particles which are used as fuel to heat the factory, and to provide steam to operate dry kilns; they are also used to heat, air condition, and humidify the Wood-mode office and factory.
