“Remodeling Fever” Redux: Tips to Survive a Remodel

September 3, 2013Building and maintaining a good relationship with your remodeler is crucial to a successful renovation. Good communication, the articulation of clearly defined goals, and a mutual understanding of budget concerns are three pillars you can use to form the base—the foundation—of your relationship with your remodeler.
Remodeling is stressful, and it can be expensive; remodeling your home will be disruptive, and require that strangers move around in the privacy of your home. Sometimes the homeowner ends up feeling like the stranger, as contractors and crews take over during a renovation.
So what traits are on the contractor’s and crew’s “wish list” when it comes to the homeowner? Here are a few things you can do to be a wonderful client.
Communicate
Communicate honestly, politely, and clearly. Don’t bite your tongue if you have a question or concern—speak right up! Contractors and designers want to make you happy, and hope for your referral after the project is complete. If you are open and honest, they will be, too.
Smile
The contractor, designer, and crew all know you are stressed out and they are working hard to get your project done so you can enjoy it. A smile or a kind word will boost morale—on both sides. If you really love the crew working on your home, a snack or a bucket of cold beverages is a nice way to show your appreciation.
Step Back
After a thorough search, you have presumably hired a contractor whom you trust—let them get the job done. That’s not to say you should get lost, or keep quiet; by all means, stay involved by asking questions and making decisions asked of you, but let the experts do the work and don’t micromanage the crew.
Renovations can be stressful, but they don’t have to be stressful. Our clients at Cabinets & Designs can count on our staff to be open and honest, with the best possible outcome for your home in mind. Stop in to our showroom and talk to a designer today!
