Universal Design: Kitchens Designed With Everyone in Mind
November 30, 2010Spotlight on Melanie Dauphin Brown
December 14, 2010Wood-Mode can show you how to create your dream kitchen on any budget. Using the same floor plan (see photos) but different door styles, finishes, and/or decorative accents you are able to produce the same look at a lower price.
At the highest price point, Wood-Mode cabinetry is used. The Wood-Mode line is custom, so if you can think it, if we can draw it; they will build it! There are some very interesting custom details in this design. There are Louis Phillippe Drawer Heads (con-caved drawers), bead board end panels, rosettes, decorative legs, arched valance wall cabinets and refrigerator, and a 3-piece crown moulding. All of those decorative accessories combined with the door style selection and glazed finish have made the price point where it is.
At the medium price point, Brookhaven cabinetry is used. Brookhaven, a semi-custom line, allows you to determine the width, height, and depth of your cabinets to a sixteenth of an inch. While you have a large selection of finishes and door styles, you do not have the variety and flexibility you do with the Wood-Mode line. At this price point a different door style is used and they eliminated some of the decorative accessories, such as the rosettes, bead board end panels, and refrigerator valance. They substituted the bead board end panels for standard decorative end door panels. By eliminating those items and using a different door style without a glaze the kitchen price was reduced by almost 40%.
The lowest price point uses Brookhaven cabinetry as well. Here they chose a door style without a premium. (Most door styles have premiums that are based on the detail involved in making the door and are added per door/drawer in your design). This design also removes the decorative door end panels. The decorative legs are substituted with a toe kick valance and a 2-piece crown replaces the 3-piece that was used in the other kitchens. With the above changes the price was reduced an additional 30%.
