One of the frequently-asked-questions we hear during kitchen and bath renovations is in regard to the price difference on plumbing fixtures between big box stores and plumbing suppliers. At first glance, it certainly appears that purchasing fixtures at a box store—or even online—would result in big savings.
Unfortunately, homeowners can run into problems when they choose the up-front sticker savings on a big box store product. Let’s look at some of the ways shopping with a professional plumbing supplier–like Ferguson and Morrison Supply Company–can save you time, stress, and money during a renovation.
Hidden Costs
It can be confusing when you see what appear to be identical faucets for sale with widely different pricing. The key phrase here is “appear to be”—that under-budget faucet you’re considering online is not identical to the one at your local plumbing supply store. Inside, the fittings are made of different material; the less expensive model will have plastic inside, rather than metal fittings.
No Guarantees
Parts purchased at big box stores or online aren’t guaranteed like those purchased with a plumbing supplier. Installation problems arise when parts purchased at a box store, or online, aren’t guaranteed; shopping for additional or replacement parts at your plumbing supplier isn’t possible, because you didn’t purchase the original fixture through them in the beginning.
What Warranty?
Another big drawback to purchasing plumbing fixtures online or at a deep discounted box store price is the warranty. When you purchase through a plumbing supplier and a professional installs the products, your fixtures are protected by excellent warranties. Not only is your online faucet not covered by the same warranty, your contractor may not even agree to install it unless it’s purchased through a plumbing supplier.
There are many creative ways to save money during a renovation process, but cutting corners on important items like plumbing fixtures can cause you a headache in the long run. When in doubt—ask a professional!
