It’s difficult to generalize when it comes to kitchen renovation budgets because no two kitchens are the same. Once a homeowner is finished making dozens of small decisions, every kitchen is a custom kitchen. The prospect of spending that much money all at once can be intimidating, which means we often hear questions like, “So — how much do most people spend on a new kitchen?”
At Cabinets & Designs, we’ve remodeled kitchens big and small, with budgets to match. The suggested budget categories below are merely guidelines, of course—a “small” kitchen renovation budget can easily exceed $40,000 depending on the material and finish choices, just as a “large” kitchen can be done on a more restricted budget—so think of them as such.
Level One: The $40,000 Kitchen
A good rule of thumb is the smaller the kitchen, the smaller the budget, so if your kitchen space is tiny, you can easily control some of your costs through the material and finish choices. In this price range think condominium-sized kitchens in the 150-200 square foot range. Changing the layout? Expect to spend more. Upgrading finishes or adding “green” elements for sustainability? Those will also cost more. Work with your kitchen designer to determine where you want to invest and where you want to save.
Level Two: The $75,000 Kitchen
If your kitchen is a little larger (200-300 square feet) and/or you’re looking to add a few more luxe features like high-end appliances or granite countertops, you’re looking at the $75,000 range. Spend or save by making choices on custom cabinetry in luxury finishes, stainless steel appliances, and fun “bells and whistles” like custom under cabinet refrigeration and integrated “smart” appliances.
Level Three: The $95,000+ Kitchen
If you are renovating a large (300+ square foot) kitchen and/or you’re ready for a complete custom kitchen makeover, your budget can start somewhere around $95,000. Again, the larger the renovation, the bigger the budget, and layout changes will add to the cost. For your dream custom kitchen, the sky is the limit!
