The acronym stands for “Designer Interiors Volunteer At your Service.” This creative arm of the Houston Furniture Bank is tasked with transforming the homes of our city’s disadvantaged families, turning “bare bones” homes into comfortable living spaces using mostly donated, gently-used items.
About Houston Furniture Bank
The Houston Furniture Bank story begins in 1992, when it was created to serve the Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County, assisting patients transitioning out of mental health facilities. Today the Houston Furniture Bank is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has served more than 80,000 individuals since 1992. More than 75 social service agencies refer clients to the Houston Furniture Bank, to help families transition to independent living, often while struggling with extreme poverty. About the Houston Furniture Bank D.I.V.A.S.
Based on referrals from case managers, the D.I.V.A.S. select clients in need based on a variety of factors. As clients and their families work to recover from a various array of life situations, the Houston Furniture Bank D.I.V.A.S. bring in the beds, sofas, décor, and storage solutions to help make moving into a new house comfortable. The D.I.V.A.S. complete 8-10 projects per year, and could serve more families with new volunteers—is it you?
