May 29, 2015Memorial Day Weekend is just around the corner, and you know what that means—the annual AIA Sand Castle Weekend in Galveston! For more than twenty years, teams have been bringing their sand castle-building skills to East Beach in Galveston for one of the largest sand castle competitions in the world. The teams are comprised of architects, engineers, contractors, and students; home construction and renovation experts pooling their talents to win the coveted Golden Bucket Award.
Over the course of the weekend more than 20,000 spectators flock to East Beach to watch the carvings emerge from sand like magic. For Cabinets & Designs President Maria Frank, it’s a chance for the GHBA Remodelers Council to kick back and have fun with colleagues—and who can resist a little competition?
“It’s so great to get out there and to have fun, but with a competition element that really lets everyone tap into their professional skills in a unique, fun way,” said Maria. “These are folks who get to be creative in their daily jobs, but creating sand castles as a team takes it to another level.”
The Sand Castle Competition is also a fundraiser for AIA Houston and ArCH Foundation, and is one of the top five revenue-generating events for the City of Galveston—it’s a huge celebration! The field in 2015 features more than 60 teams who have been planning and designing their masterpieces for months. Judges will take the following into consideration: originality of concept, artistic execution, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site.
The most coveted award of the day is the Golden Bucket, but several other awards will be presented including: Best Traditional, That’s Entertainment, Most Complex, Stars & Stripes, Best Architectural, Most Hilarious, and Most Lifelike/Realistic.
We hope to see you in Galveston on Saturday, May 30—keep your eye out for the GHBA RMC Team on the beach, and come cheer us on!
