December 31, 2014Most of the time we like to talk shop here at the Cabinets & Designs blog: Wood-Mode cabinetry, tips for holiday entertaining, and the like. However, given that Christmas is just around the corner, we thought we’d take a quick break and share a bit of fun with you—a list of some of our favorite holiday movies! Whether you’re popping in a classic like White Christmas to watch with the whole family, or curling up with your sweetheart to watch Love, Actually for the tenth time, almost all of us have a special holiday movie tradition or memory—here are a few of ours.
Christmas Classics
These old films are so classic, so cozy, you might almost wish for snow to fall outside while you watch!
- The lighthearted romantic musical comedy White Christmas stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney, and it’s very family-friendly—a great choice for big holiday parties with the whole family. Crosby’s rendition of “White Christmas” is a classic, but pay attention when Rosemary Clooney sings “Love, You Didn’t Do Right By Me”—it’s wonderful.
- Meet Me in St. Louis may not get as much attention as a White Christmas, but it’s a true holiday classic that gave us one of our all-time favorite holiday songs, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Starring the amazing Judy Garland, Meet Me in St. Louis is another wonderful, family-friendly favorite.
- No list of Christmas classics is complete without It’s a Wonderful Life! The Frank Capra classic starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed is a charming, heartwarming favorite. You can always catch it on TV this time of year, or maybe buy the DVD as a little Christmas present to yourself.
Modern Classics
It’s hard to pick just a handful of our favorite modern Christmas classics—especially when a few of them are remakes of original classics!—but here are three we think are especially great:
- We already mentioned it briefly, but Love, Actually is one of the best modern Christmas movies out there! It’s “R” rating mean it’s more of a date-night film, so skip this one during the family Christmas party! A charming, British comedy, Love, Actually stars some of your favorite actors, including Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Bill Nighy, and Emma Thompson.
- Who can resist Will Ferrell’s goofy, loving, naïve take on Buddy in the modern classic Elf? It’s heartwarming and fun, and Ferrell’s holiday cheer is positively relentless—it’s one of the most perfect Christmas movies ever!
- Finally, no list of modern classics is complete without A Christmas Story. The tale of Ralphie and his Red Ryder BB gun is so popular, and the film so iconic, an entire generation of kids can recite the movie by heart! It helps that TBS runs the movie for 24 hours straight every Christmas Eve!
From everyone at Cabinets & Designs, we wish you a happy holiday season and a healthy New Year!
