The Houston Habitat ReStore is one of our city’s hidden gems for homeowners looking to renovate on a budget. The ReStore is a non-profit home improvement store and donation center that sells new and gently-used furniture, home accessories, building materials, appliances, flooring, cabinetry and much, much more—all at a fraction of retail prices, and with proceeds benefitting Houston Habitat for Humanity. That means that when you shop at the ReStore, your purchase will help build more homes for more hard-working, low-income families.
Homeowners can also get a hand on some deconstruction duties through ReStore, which offers the following:
Tear down can be one of the most stressful aspects of a home renovation project, so this is a wonderful incentive for homeowners to take advantage of ReStore. In addition to saving on the cost of materials, you have the opportunity to get help with deconstruction and pick-up/take-away of materials, plus a tax-deduction.
Houston Habitat volunteers have built more than 960 houses over the last 27 years, and these houses then became homes to over 3,600 people. Building affordable, energy-efficient homes is just one function of Houston Habitat for Humanity; they also sponsor neighborhood revitalization initiatives, and repair existing homes for low-income families. Building 30-50 new homes each year, Houston Habitat for Humanity also provides support services like Family Services, Mortgage Services, and Volunteer Services, in addition to the ReStore. Relying wholly on donor support, the Houston Habitat for Humanity organization gives low-to moderate-income families in our city a hand up to help them build a stronger future.
