Remodeling Tips and Suggestions

  • Remodeling projects are all about managing expectations, and that is true for all the players: clients, contractors, installers, and designers. We all have expectations for a job, which is where the excitement of change comes from; those same expectations can sometimes cause anxiety—usually when something unexpected happens. The trick to surviving a remodeling project is managing expectations through patience and communication.

Over the years we have learned a few tips on what makes a successful remodeling project, so this week we thought we would share with you a few of our favorite pearls of wisdom.

    Commit and Communicate

Open channels of communication should exist between all of the players of your remodel: designer, client, contractor, etc. When you make a decision, be decisive and stick with it—if change your mind too often a project can go off the rails with delays. If you have questions or you aren’t sure about something, speak up and get the answers you need to make the decision that will move the project along.

    The Online Myth

Ordering materials or parts online is a common pitfall we have seen that can derail a remodeling project. When materials are ordered online it is often in an effort to save money, however when parts come in late the savings are quickly eaten up by interruption in the project timeline. Another issue with ordering parts online is the warranty—your warrant protections with online parts is often different than when ordered from a supplier. Always consult with your designer on when and where to order parts for a remodel.

    A Realistic Timeline

Do you want your new kitchen ready by the holidays? You might want to start earlier than you think. If you think you are cutting it close, you probably are; a designer can help you determine if your new kitchen will be ready before you host your annual New Year’s Eve bash.

Delays are common, so you should expect them (within reason) and build that into your project’s timeline.
