As part of the our preparation for the upcoming move to our new showroom at The Shoppes at Memorial Villages, the Cabinets & Designs team is working on designs for the new space. When Cabinets and Designs President Maria Frank returned from KBIS 2015 in Las Vegas, she was full of inspiration—and her iPhone was full of pictures of the products and ideas that inspired her! We recently sat down with Maria to sneak a peek at her amazing photo gallery and to learn about a few of the items that caught her eye.
“There is just never enough time to see everything I want to see!” exclaimed Maria as she scrolled through her photo array, pointing out some of the many highlights from her visit. “Naturally the dogs at the Wood-Mode booth were adorable—people were just lined up to take a selfie with the dogs.”
Maria was referring to the PAWSitive Partnership Wood-Mode has developed with the Susquehanna Service Dogs organization, which raises, trains and places service dogs to assist individuals with disabilities. As part of their new Pet Parlor display at KBIS, Wood-Mode had four service dogs-in-training on hand so attendees could take selfies with the dogs; for every selfie uploaded Wood-Mode donated $5 to SSD. We can’t wait to find out the grand total, and we applaud Wood-Mode for supporting such a worthy organization.
Several appliances caught Maria’s eye at KBIS, including the 24” Frost-Free Freezer from U-Line Corporation. “You never see freezers that small, so it really stood out,” explained Maria. “That unit is all about integration and customization.” Maria also fell in love with a French door oven by Viking, and noted that GE also has a similar model for those on a budget.
“I also love the little gadget-y solutions,” Maria confessed as she pointed to her photo of the Docking Drawer, a UL-listed in-drawer docking station that is a simple and elegant solution to today’s high-tech lifestyle. Another handy little device was the Majig Light Puck Light Jig from Richelieu—an innovative little jig for installing under-cabinet lighting.
We’ve only scratched the surface of the best products and trends from KBIS 2015. Check back with us during the month of February for more of Maria’s favorites, and a list of this year’s “Best of KBIS” winners. Don’t forget to connect with Cabinets and Designs on Facebook, Twitter, and Houzz!

We have had an exciting few months interacting with our local building, remodeling, and design communities here in Houston and along the Gulf Coast. In May, Maria reported on some of her memorable highlights from KBIS in New Orleans; on June 20th, Cabinets & Designs was on hand for an industry mixer with online home design and décor resource, The Red Vault; last week we were pleased to announce that we were the recipients of Wood-Mode’s 2012 Master Award.
Continuing with the theme of community involvement, we also have some news about our Vice-President, Maria Frank. Maria was recently elected to the Greater Houston Builders’ Association Remodelers’ Council as the Education Committee chairperson. Her role as chair of the Education Committee is to promote GHBA/NAHB education programs, working in conjunction with the GHBA’s Director of Education. The Education Committee awards a quarterly scholarship to a remodeler in an effort to further foster learning within the GHBA, and the Leo Meerman Scholarship to a remodeler council member or immediate family member to further their education.
In addition to her role as Education Committee chairperson, Maria is also on the garage sale committee. Proceeds from the annual garage sale are used to fund the Remodelers’ Council annual charity projects with non-profit organizations; this year’s sale will be held on September 21st & 22nd at the Reliant Center. The charity project will be with The Beacon Day Center, which assists Houston’s homeless and others facing hard times with private lavatory and shower facilities, warm meals, laundry services and case management. Last year approximately $18,000 was raised! We definitely look forward to this wonderful annual event.
It’s truly an honor to be part of such an active professional community. We invite you to interact with us—like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter, for all the latest news in building, remodeling, and design.
