This summer our blogs have focused on innovative new products: bathroom vanities, tub and shower design, and new surfaces from Silestone have all been featured on the Cabinets and Design blog. This week we want to explore innovations in walls and flooring, but first let’s briefly discuss practical considerations when choosing flooring and walls for your bathroom.
What should I keep in mind?
Bathrooms are humid rooms, and you want to choose walls and flooring that will stand up to repeated humidity caused by shower steam and vapor. If your bathroom doubles as a laundry room that also creates additional heat to content with; keep issues like heat and moisture in mind when choosing bathroom surfaces. Will children or aging family members be using this bathroom? Consider things like how cold the surface is to the touch—standing on cold surfaces for long periods of time can be uncomfortable for some. Also keep in mind that bathroom floors get wet, and wet floors can be slippery. Keeping practical considerations in mind—who will use the bathroom and what their needs are — will help you narrow down your choices.
Innovations we love
From Silestone by Cosentino we see tiles and slabs used as flooring or wall surfacing for a spa-like feel; an almost post-modern aesthetic that is both clean and futuristic. The White Zeus (pictured) is a pure, clean, white hue that will make any bathroom feel like a luxurious space, perfect for relaxation.
Heated floors—heaven! Warmly Yours Radiant Heating technology provides the comfort of warm flooring underfoot. Anyone who has stood on cold tile or marble knows how uncomfortable that can be after just a short period of time. Electric heating can be installed under ceramic tile, stone, hardwood, wood, and other popular flooring options. Radiant heating is especially friendly for anyone suffering from joint pains or other connective tissue ailments, and kids love it, too.
FLOR Modular Carpet Tiles are amazing! You can mix and match them to create a custom pattern for your bathroom. Do the entire room, or create a rug by only laying down carpet tile in specific areas: one large center rug, or several “throw rug” style designs in key areas (think in front of the tub, toilet, and vanity).
These wall decals for bathrooms from Trading Phrases are charming; a quick and easy way to give your bathroom a quick (and inexpensive) face-lift. You can reinvent your bathroom space over and over by switching out an old decal for a new one. Inspirational, whimsical, and fun, your bathroom can really say something about you!
